GLADE HILL, VA – Delegate Charles Poindexter (R-9th) will run for re-election to represent the newly drawn 9th District in the Virginia House of Delegates.
“I have been privileged to represent the citizens of Franklin, Floyd and Northwestern Pittsylvania Counties in the House of Delegates these past four years and will be honored to serve the people of Patrick, most of Franklin, and western Henry Counties, if re-elected, ” Poindexter said. “I work hard to represent the people’s views and concerns and to be an effective Legislator. You can count on me to continue to stand firm and fight for Virginia’s rural and small town conservative values.”
Currently, the 9th District includes all of Franklin and Floyd Counties and Northwestern Pittsylvania County. Based on the redistricting plan signed by Governor Bob McDonnell and awaiting approval from the U.S. Department of Justice, the newly drawn 9th District includes all of Franklin County except the Burnt Chimney, Cooper’s Cove, and Bonbrook precincts, all of Patrick County, and western Henry County.
Poindexter said he will fully represent and serve the citizens of the current 9th District until January 2012.
“The thought of my not representing the wonderful people of Pittsylvania, Floyd and parts of Franklin Counties after High Noon on Opening Day of the 2012 General Assembly Session takes some getting used to. I will miss them. At the same time, I look forward to introducing myself to the people in the new areas of the 9th District, listening to their concerns and, hopefully, representing them in Richmond come January.”
Poindexter targeted issues of major concern in the 9th District.
“Jobs and economic development is the primary priority in our region and throughout the state, “ Poindexter said. “Sensible energy policies are also important. I will continue to focus on what more we can do in Richmond and the 9th District to address those issues.“
Poindexter, a conservative Republican, served two terms on the Franklin County Board of Supervisors prior to his election to the House of Delegates in 2007. In the House, he serves on the Appropriations Committee, the Agriculture - Natural Resources - Chesapeake Committee, and the Counties, Cities and Towns Committee.
He is vice-chairman of the State Energy and Environment Commission, serves on the Boards of Directors of the Roanoke Higher Education Authority, the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation, and the Blue Ridge Mountains Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He also serves as a Legislative Member of the Roanoke River Basin Advisory Committee and the Virginia/North Carolina Bi-State Commission.
This spring, Poindexter received Lynchburg College’s 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award. He graduated from Lynchburg College with a BS in Mathematics and earned his MS in Management from the George Washington University. He is a former Information Technology (IT) executive in the DOD industry. These days, in addition to representing the 9th District’s constituents, he farms his own land and family land settled by his Poindexter ancestors in 1792.
Poindexter is an active member of Crafts United Methodist Church, where he sings in the choir and is chairman of the Board of Trustees. He and his wife Janet have six adult children and ten grandchildren. They live at Smith Mountain Lake in Glade Hill near the original Poindexter homeplace.
