State Capitol Report   February 8, 2009
I am pleased to report that two of my bills made it through the House this week and have moved on to the Senate for their approval. My House Bill 756 provides that registration fees for vehicles specially equipped to accommodate persons with disabilities will be based on the weight prior to the installation of such special equipment. My House Bill 758 provides that computers and related equipment purchased during the sales tax holiday in August will also be exempt from sales tax.

Several of my bills have been assigned to special commissions for more study and I will present them again in 2009. I have patroned budget amendments requesting funds for the Franklin County Historical Society, the Floyd County Historical Preservation Trust, the Jubal A. Early Preservation Trust and the Blue Ridge Foundation. In addition, I have patroned budget amendments for funding for Smith Mountain Lake to include water quality monitoring, treatment and control for hydrilla and other invasive vegetative species, and for the maintenance of the navigation aid system. I also have patroned commending resolutions for several people, including the Gretna Hawks for winning the Virginia High School League Group A, Division 2 state championship on December 8, 2007.

I have had many visitors from home recently: the Franklin County School Board and Superintendent; the Floyd County School Board and Superintendent, Pittsylvania County Administrator Dan Sleeper and Board of Supervisors members Coy Harville and James Snead; the Franklin County Education Association, the Southern Virginia Child Advocacy Center in Rocky Mount, the Floyd County Department of Social Services, and Franklin County Sheriff Ewell Hunt. Visiting from the Rocky Mount Town Council were Town Manager James Irvin and assistant Town Manager Matt Hankins and Vice-Mayor Roger Seale and Town Council member John Lester. Janet Mease also visited me again while she and a group from home were in Richmond to speak before a House Committee.

I have welcomed our college students who have visited the General Assembly. It was good seeing Rocky Mount’s Samantha Robertson, a student at Bridgewater College; Chris Cooper of Glade Hill, a student at Radford; Brenda Sigmon of Franklin County, a student at Patrick Henry Community College; and Denise Corbin of Rocky Mount, a student at Virginia Western Community College, and Roger Elmore from the Skelton/Virginia Tech 4-H Center at Smith Mountain Lake.

If you’ll be visiting Richmond during this year’s session, make sure to stop by our office, located in Room 807 of the General Assembly Building.
